French citizenship

Moving on from yesterday's results on EU membership my thoughts are turning towards gaining French citizenship. I was born in France and hold a French birth certificate, would pursuing this venture be a mere formality?

If you were born in France you definitely have a good change of becoming a citizen but unless one of your parents was also born in France then it is not automatic and naturalisation is your best best unless you married a French citizen although either way you must have lived in France (for 5 years) and be integrated and speak good French. There are a bunch of caveats and exemptions so it's worth checking the detail and it might be worth seeking legal advice although you can apply yourself for free. It'll take at least a year to sort out and mostly likely longer. If you are settled in France and wish to remain there for life this seems like a good option.
