Live Life in Creuse

Poisson Rouge

About 9 months ago I bought 6 small (2 cm long) goldfish (poisson rouge) from the local Bricomarche. They came home together in a single small plastic bag along with a tub of fish food. I thought that it'd add some life to our pond and help keep the algae at bay a bit.

Now we think we have somewhere between 60 and 100 fish ranging in size from more than 15 cm to less than 1 cm. We have 6 very big fish which we think are the original beasts.

It's difficult to get a good picture of them all but this gives an impression.

Are you going to keep them all, looks like the start of a business to me;)

haha, well the 6 original fish were only €1 each retail including a carry home bag, so I doubt I could get rich.

We have thought of transferring some to another pond, and we'd be happy to give some of the smaller one's away.

They have all cleared the pond of algae and are pretty cool to watch.

I only hope that some at least survive the winter months.

That is an excellent outcome. Your pond must be an ideal environment for them. Happy fish! It reminds me of my first pond when I was ten. There was a population explosion in the first year but fish are self regulating (canibals) so it settled down quickly.
I am attracted by your kind suggestion that you may give a few away. We paid four euros for six little goldfish and four survived the summer. We hope they are still there when we return in the spring. They joined four very large goldfish that we bought ten years ago to replace a total loss of the original group of various fish following a major leak while we were back in UK. The big fish seem happy but have not produced any offspring. I thought it was because Bricomarche supplied specially treated non-breeding fish!
I tried to find your location in Creuse but failed to spot it. Are you near a notable village?
Watch out for visits from any local herons.
