Electrician

Recently I asked a local electrician to carry out a simple job to help me install a new Cooker. He needed to extend an existing line about a metre along the wall. The work was completed easily within two hours as he waited once it was installed to ensure that the oven worked.

The bill has arrived today for €187 , which is explained as 2 units (I presume hrs work) at €85 and the rest is tax. My question is, what is the normal hourly rate for a qualified electrician?

We were advised early on always to get a dévis in advance for any work done. If the bill was for €85 per hour, it's darn steep. And if the €85 is for two hours' work, €102 tax is surprising.

I may be a little out of date but I would have thought that a rate of €35 to €40 + TVA per hour was more the norm but I would expect small jobs like this would be at a premium or at fixed price since the overheads (travel etc would need to be covered). As virtdave says you really should agree this in advance.
