French new films subtitled in English, in Guéret ?
by jeanpierre • Thu 19 Jan 2012 20:10

The cinema Sénéchal, in Guéret, can show French new films subtitled in English, on request.
Or French new films spoken in English, but I’m not sure it is the best choice.

I thought of “Intouchables”, which is very good, and seen by so many people in France.

So I’ve just asked the manager of the cinema.

He told me he knows how to get these films subtitled in English.
We should give him a list of films.
He needs a minimum of 40 spectators.
And probably some delay for the planification.

Is it a good idea ?
Do you feel concerned ?
Which day in the week ? At what time ?

Thank you for your advices.
Jean Pierre

We discussed this before in 2006 (when we only needed 15 people) and in the poll we only got 12 responses (and 1 of those said they'd never go). In the end nothing came if it, AFAIK.

Personally I'd be interested in going but only to some films.

Again I've added a poll to this topic to gauge the level of interest.

That's a nice idea Jean Pierre & you have obviously done some research on it. Personally I not sure if it would work. Different people have different tastes in the films they want to watch so I dont think you are likely to get 40+ people who want to see the same film & also on the same day/evening. It might work as the occasional " one off" but I'm doubtfull of a regular longer term thing.

Just my thoughts & I could be wrong, so it will be interesting to see the results of Dave's poll.

Its a good idea but it would need to be promoted on a larger platform than the forums I think.

I agree with Rictel on different tastes.

I think if you choose the big cinema hits then you might stand a chance.

I have been to the Cinéma in Bourganeuf and seen films in French, and two english films in Peyrat le chateau (87).

We would be interested in this, please. It's a way to improve your French but gives you more of an idea what the film is about while you're improving!

John-Pierre

Thanks for looking into this. We're very interested I would prefer French films with English subtitles (although Paul says on occasion he would like to see original version film).
I'm actually itching to see War Horse which has just been released.

Kind regards

Jacky and Paul Hawker :)

I agree with Jeanne that it would probably work best with the "blockbuster" type movies. There also seem to be people who would prefer to have English soundtrack, & others who would prefer French soundtrack with English sub-titles, so is it likely that 40+ people would all agree on the same film in the same format ?

Out of interest I looked at the Senechal website & this week they are showing the new J.Edgar Hoover film in VF ( version francaise ) & VO ( version originale ) which i assume is the original US soundtrack, so maybe they do show the occasional VO film anyway ?

Hi

I feel my idea has no consensus!
Here are my ideas.

The criteria would be:
- French Films, because we are in France!
- With a wide success, to a large variety of people, sensibility and ages,
- Recent,
- Subtitled in English, more than English soundtrack, because it let hear the French version.

My suggestions (movies I love, of course!):

1. Intouchables (2011)
The story is described here
It is screened in every cinema since December.
19 millions tickets have been sold so far in France: 25% of French people have seen it.
Funny and with a real meaning.
Very rare are the people who disliked this film.

2. Bienvenue chez les Chti’s (2008)
The story is described here
20 millions tickets sold in France!
Comic, not serious. May however give some keys about the north of France.

3. Des Hommes et des Dieux (2010)
The story is described here
2 millions tickets sold in France:
A true story. Serious.

4. La Môme (2007)
The story is described here
5 millions tickets sold in France:
True (the story of Edith Piaf).

If it works, it could end in a café...

I won’t meet the owner of the cinema until I feel if my proposal can meet success.

I would be very happy with ANY French movie with English subtitles, because the goal is to improve our French and this is a fun way to do it! Also, a French movie helps us to understand the culture.

You can see a strictly French language movie in any theater, but this would be very nice for people like me, for example, who have only lived here 2 months (and others whose French is not that good yet).

And as Jean-Pierre said, we can "prend un verre" afterwards and enjoy the social aspect.

Sounds like a win/win situation!

I like the choice of films - I've always wanted to see the Chti's. The English Library at La Souterraine will advertise these on our noticeboard and in our newslettters.

The Bugle would also be more than happy to help promote this and publicise upcoming film screenings if we can get enough interest. I think it's a great idea!!!
