Internet Connection Speed Survey
by Dave • Mon 06 Sep 2010 14:36

I've been careful to ensure that Pont Noir is accessible to members that don't have broadband connections and this has meant that the site doesn't have a huge amount of images and video.

Later in the year Pont Noir will be completely overhauled and as part of this I want to include specifically better support for images and video. However before I do this I want to check that the percentage of members using dial-up access is now pretty low, since if more than half of the active membership still use it then clearly it wouldn't be in the sites interest to exclude those members.

Please fill in the poll and post any queries or comments below.

For those that access us from more than one location, please choose your primary point (i.e. if you have broadband in the UK but sometimes connect to Pont Noir with dial-up when holidaying in the Creuse, then please choose broadband as your answer).

So far (with 27 votes) there are much fewer non-broadband users than I expected. Keep those votes coming please.

There are plenty of sites that can run a speed test for you, for example: speedtest.net

OK I have just used Dave's link to test my connection and have got the following results:

DOWNLOAD: 6.83 MB/S
UPLOAD:0.68 MB/S

So what does that mean?

That means you have a pretty good connection with 7Mb/s download speed - this is the important part (taking information from the internet) and a poor but actually better than average, for the UK, upload speed (sending stuff to the internet - emails, typing in forums etc). Unless you are hosting something on your PC to which people from the internet connect the upload speed doesn't need to be that high so 0.7Mb/s is good since 0.4 or less in more typical in the UK. Other countries (especially the USA) have much high upload speeds as the norm.
