Cinema ?
by jeanpierre • Fri 03 Nov 2006 21:50

Last week-end, I went to London, where I enjoyed to see "The Queen" and "An Inconvenient Truth" in English, at the cinema.
Now back home, I wonder if it could be interesting to have (in the Gueret cinema - called 'le Sénéchal') films in English, from time to time.
I know that the cinema manager always does his best, for example with wheel-chaired people, even if it is not easy for him.

I would certainly be interested in the occasional film in English especially some classics. I'd also offer free advertising here in the News section.

If it was advertised well in advance I think he could easily get a full house, especially for family films (Harry Potter, Star Wars, Ice Age). Perhaps once a month on an otherwise quiet night?

I know that in Bourganeuf they screen English language films sometimes (for example Harry Potter) but I don't have any details on who does this.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your reply. I've just phoned to the man who is in charge of the cinema in Bourganeuf.

He told me that :
- such an enquiry is welcomed, if 15 people at least are concerned by a same film, because of his shipping costs from Bordeaux.
- previously, an estate agent in Bourganeuf was asking him, from time to time, to display some major films, in English langage. But he thinks that no demand has occurred for long.

Perhaps the difficulty is to choose a film, and to define a date.

Kind regards :

Jean Pierre

That sounds good. I think maybe we can do some work for him. If we make a regular date once a month, say the 3rd thursday night each month and choose some films in advance for say four months and then afterwards get suggestions going for more films, then we can I think easily make sure we have 15 people or more each month.

If we have a mix of films, say some classics and some family blockbusters then I expect a good turn out so long as we advertise in advance.

Everyone please give us your suggestions.

I have added a poll to the thread to see how much interest there might be.

Looks like there is some interest.

How about some film suggestions then?

Jean Pierre, do you know if films will have French subtitles? That would make classic films of interest outside of the English speaking community perhaps.

Some Film Ideas

Modern
Casino Royal
Spiderman 3
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Flushed Away
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Classic
North by Northwest
Hound of the Baskervilles
Adam's Rib
The Longest Day
The Lady Vanishes
Kind Hearts and Coronets
The Forbidden Plant
It's A Wonderful Life
The Maltese Falcon

I don't know if all (or any) of these are possible but this is what I had in mind. Maybe alternating a modern and a classic film each month.

Said Dave
Thanks Dave for your suggestion.
In fact, I think that most of these major films are fully translated to french.
But I would like to listen to English, both for my pleasure and for my job. As even written subtitles disturb me : my mind reads the text in French. I would prefer no subtitle at all. I don't know if the cinema agrees with my point of vue (perhaps is it uneasy for the cinema to find untranslated films in France, there are not many clients are like me out of university...).
Regards.
