Cleaning old floorboards
by sally watkins • Fri 07 Oct 2016 20:02

Hi there,

When we removed the lino from our landing, the floorboards below were and still are, covered in a white powdery filler/plaster. We've cleaned much of it off, but the stuff just won't go away and is stuck in the grain. I guess it was a leveller before the lino went down or something to fill in gaps.

Does anyone know what it is, or how to get rid of it? I've wondered about vinegar to break it down a bit.

Thanks,

Sally

male half of les meuniers says go and hire a belt sander (ponceuse à bande) AND observe the rules about masks/breathing apparatus/whatever. depending on your budget and the area of the floor do not bother buying a cheap one. many years of living with a man who believes in the most professional tool possible has taught me he is usually right about this. moreover if the required tool is heavy enough he is usually willing to do the job himself.
don't know where you are but there is a tool hire place on the z.a. in gueret
