St. Joseph's Day = "le mariage des oiseaux"
by thewrights • Sun 20 Mar 2011 14:56

I was chatting over the wall to my elderly french neighbour and commented that the birdsong seems to be changing this week - so perhaps Spring is really on the way. . .

She said that it was because yesterday was the Saints Day for Saint Joseph, and that on that day the birds "get married"!! And then they sing whilst they work together building their nests etc.

I'd never heard that piece of folklore before - and am wondering if it's a well-known "changing of the seasons" fact . . . or if it's something peculiar to this area. It'd be nice to think it's special to the Creuse!! :)
