Flies!

Not sure if this is the right area to post... but here goes

Since moving in we seem to be having an increasing problem with flies.

Literally hundreds of them (blue bottles and houseflies I believe) are congregating in our bathroom. They aren't flying around or buzzing but rather sitting about on the window, curtain, shower curtain, bath, tiles etc. - like they are waiting for a very important meeting to start!!! There are a few flies, ie 1 or 2 in other parts of the house (which you would expect)- but the bathroom is starting to look like something out of a horror movie.

The bathroom is clean and obviously there is no food left around in there - also it doesn't smell like the drains need doing.

We have tried spraying and zapping them with an electric bat like fly killer and also putting an ultra violet light zapper in there - all of this works for a few hours, but once we stop they re-appear in masses.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be the cause and how to get rid of the little blighters?

If you have a large amount of flies in one enclosed area this is likely to mean one thing: a dead body of some kind nearby. While flies can appear by the hundred on your outside walls (just sunning themselves) inside it would be unusual for a great amount to all get in and go to one place. If it is a dead critter then the numbers will thin out in a week or so. We use the gum strips that you can buy in most supermarkets for around a €1 for a pack of 4. Just bin them every few days as the gum dries out.

we find gum strips best at our workplace and as dave says they will decrease probably dead critter somewhere.

I searched for a post about flies as we have exactly the same problem though it's now 2013! Only in our ensuite bathroom and being new to Creuse we are wondering if the previous owner did away with his girlfriend (who seems to have disappeared some months before he sold the house) and walled her up in the bathroom!

LOL. That is a strong possibility. It was on the news that a woman shot her daughter in law dead a few days ago at Pradeau, Toulx Ste Croix, which is near Boussac.

And as everyone else says a dead bird, mouse or something in the ceiling or thereabouts.
