French phrases

Dictionaries, including most on-line ones, are fine for single-word translations, but often frustrating when trying to find a phrase in another language. I found this site really helpful in this regard...just used it to find the French equivalent of "dry well" (which in British English is "catch basin")--it's puisard, and alas, mon puisard est fichu.

I've tried this site out a few times and it's pretty helpful, but it is lacking in idioms (where you might expect it to excel). I tried "at my wit's end" for translation into French and whilst I got back many phrases that are close, this one wasn't there.

It can be a good way to spend a few minutes, just enter a word or two and then browse the phases it lists. Quiet fascinating stuff sometimes (try "seat covers" for example).

"Seat covers" does produce a big choice. I tried seatcover also on Word Reference, which is another good source of translation stuff, and was pretty much directly given housse de siège --Word Reference can be accessed to search without signing up, but one must sign up to post there.
