Foraging, mushrooms, chestnuts et al
by cmchsmjm • Thu 19 Oct 2017 08:29

Hello good people,

beyond the bounds of our hamlet, what are the rules/laws with regards to foraging for mushrooms and other delicious goodies?

My brother and I have just returned from 5 days at the house and had an amazing time gathering (and eating) 11 species of edible mushrooms, walnuts and chestnuts.
We are keen to explore other areas in the region but don't want to risk falling foul of the law.

For an overview, you can look here. It seems that mushroom hunting is ok on communal lands, but not routinely on private property unless you get permission from the owner. If you're interested in a particular commune, a call to the mairie would be a good idea. Also, be cautious about mushrooming on weekends in hunting season (now). Most hunters are quite ok with it, but gathering mushrooms while waiting for game to appear is part of the amusement of hunting. And you don't want to be near where shots are being fired.
