Live Life in Creuse

Open Gardens Weekend
by Annik • Mon 23 Jun 2014 11:36
On Saturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29, from 10am to 7pm there will be an Open Gardens Weekend across the Creuse in aid of the children's cancer charity, "A Chacun Son Everest!"

To date there are 30 gardens listed on the associated website: http://www.opengardens.eu and I understand that more are being added all the time. Last year there were only four, so you can see how the idea has snowballed.

I am only the recipient of a flyer (given by a friend who thought we would be interested) and know nothing about the scheme other than what is written there.

"Our gardens range from newly established English gardens to mature French gardens. They vary from sheltered gardens to exposed gardens, some have vegetable plots, some don't.

"Many of the gardens have an individual feature such as a pond or bee hives. Some of our gardeners are new to gardening, some have been gardeners all their lives.

"All are well worth a visit so that you can pick up hints and tips that help you in your garden. Often an element of the design or materials used can inspire you for your next project."

Admission is 5€ per person, children under 13 years free (no dogs), which entitles you to visit as many gardens as you wish. You can buy a ticket at the first garden you visit, or via the website.

For those people who are interested, the scheme has expanded hugely and now has over 70 gardens in 12 departments. Naturally, people who live in the Creuse will be mostly keen to see gardens in the Limousin and the Haute Vienne & the Creuse are particularly well represented. The process has changed since last year and gardens are now open at various dates throughout the year and all of these can be accessed by one simple payment of 10€, which can be bought either via the website (see below for details) or by mail from:
The Treasurer
Open Gardens/Jardins Ouverts
1 La Combe
23300 Vareilles

We are always looking for new gardens to add to our rapidly expanding "collection" and if the idea of helping to develop the concept of a "Yellow Book" in France appeals to you, please get in touch with mick@opengardens.eu or on 05 55 63 43 12. There is a lot more information on our website (which has also been completely redesigned) http://www.opengardens.eu where you can also see full details and photos of the participating gardens. We look forward to seeing you in one or more of our gardens in the near future.
