Re: Soft Fruits

by virtdave • Sun 02 Apr 2017 18:24

We stuck a dozen cuttings from a friend's redcurrant bush in the ground a few years ago--most of them did fine. It took me a while to figure out that the French word groseille is used for redcurrants and for what I've always called gooseberry. And 'cape gooseberry' is physalis edulis. If we get a wa...

Re: La Courtine military base?

by virtdave • Mon 06 Mar 2017 21:33

Our place is a few km north of Malleret, and we too occasionally hear some bomb noise, a bit like distant thunder, but it's never been annoying. Not only hunting, but mushroom gathering is discouraged in the military camp, and it's thought there may be some unexploded ordnance lurking in the shrubbe...

Re: How often do you visit your home?

by virtdave • Tue 21 Feb 2017 17:20

We're generally gone during the winter, and have used several different methods to reduce dankness in our house. The simplest is probably something like this , which you can get at any bricolage store. Of course, the amount of water which can be removed from your house is limited by the size of the ...

dodging another weather bullet...maybe

by virtdave • Mon 20 Feb 2017 17:43

For those who wish to keep posted about the weather 6000 miles away: California is getting hosed. The tallest dam in the USA (Oroville) is holding, so far, tho last week 180,000 people were temporarily evacuated when it looked like it might burst. Living downstream from it (far from our place here) ...

Re: Putin's choice for France

by virtdave • Tue 07 Feb 2017 16:49

You're correct....I was (perhaps incorrectly) extrapolating from one person's posted admiration of Mr.Putin. I guess I'm so bummed by Trump that I over-reacted.

Putin's choice for France

by virtdave • Tue 07 Feb 2017 06:37

Putin seems to be pulling out the megaphone against Macron--and is pushing Le Pen. Some on Pont Noir think Putin is just great--no doubt they relish the prospect of Le Pen as French president.

Re: Carpet

by virtdave • Tue 24 Jan 2017 18:30

one last thought--we've ordered carpet from the Trois Suisses and it's been quite satisfactory, for what I think you are (or were) looking for. Delivery is reliable and (for over 49 euros' purchases, I think) free.

If you search here for 'tapis' and put your postal code in the 'où' slot, you can find who sells carpets near you.....Montluçon does have a huge Brico Depot, but they may have only carpeting squares.

I, for one, welcome our new Russian overlords

by virtdave • Fri 20 Jan 2017 18:45

I guess I should feel grateful for the past eight years, having had an American president who has been dignified, qualified and classy. We plan on returning to Creuse in early May, providing Trump does not bring on a serious world catastrophe....I was rather surprised by today's on-line poll in Le F...

and Happy New Year to all in Creuse....I see that it's getting a bit wintry there, tho by California norms it was plenty chilly here for the annual Polar Bear Plunge into the Pacific.....

Our neighbor generously dumps a load of cow manure near our flower bed every winter....it works great, we had excellent zinnias, sunflowers, etc. last summer, but we grew few vegetables--tho the neighbor grows excellent vegetables using only cow poop. You can look here for a discussion.

Re: Property hunt in La Creuse. HELP!!!

by virtdave • Mon 31 Oct 2016 01:38

One more way of finding out what might be available is to check with the local mayor's office--not necessarily with M. le maire himself--during regular (infrequent but easily found) hours, perhaps asking the secretary whether she or he knows of anything in the commune. It would help to speak adequat...

Well, back to California for the election

by virtdave • Sun 23 Oct 2016 16:36

Tho we've already voted by mail, we just drained the plumbing and closed up our place in Creuse and are en route to return to San Francisco.....although Clinton is clearly sane and Trump a lunatic, I'm cautious about how her (almost certain) presidency will play out. Although she's not in any way a ...
