Re: What a bargain

Online courses are a good thing, but cassettes or CD's have the advantage of being capable of being played in one's car--there's nothing like boring repetition to drill a new language into one's head, and while working, for a year I listened to a series developed by the US foreign service for its di...

Re: Metal plate in the chimney

Tôle is French for 'sheet metal'. I believe the French term for the item you want is 'registre', a 'Pièce permettant d'obturer plus ou moins une ouverture pour régler un débit.' Instead of using sheet metal, you can get one made (or make one) from something with a bit more insulating capacity, like ...

Re: EDF Remote Consumption Readers

by virtdave • Sun 10 May 2009 17:48

My neighbor (who is often absent), after being billed 800 euros for electricity imputed to him while his house was empty (and the main switch off), decided to have a téléreport installed. The EDF was just basing its facture on the assumption that he was using the same amount of electricity each mont...

Re: Portable Generator a must have or not

by virtdave • Mon 04 May 2009 01:32

Since I'm typically in France only from May to November, I've not bought a generator there--but where I live in the winter (a very isolated spot in northern California), we get power outages every winter, usually brief but occasionally lasting a few days, so I do have one there. I've been quite glad...

Re: PC or Mac?

I think you're quite right about the advantages of a Mac for those daunted or bored by computers. Since I often amuse myself with tinkering with them, stuff that's obvious to me may be less so to a débutant.

hmm..the things I suggested to avoid trouble with one's PC are pretty straightforward--of course, for the truly geeky, there's Linux/Ubuntu. I've not priced Macs vs. PC's lately, but I'd need to be convinced that one can get a Mac as cheaply as a comparable PC.

Re: PC or Mac?

At the risk of being flamed by Mac enthusiasts, a PC is quite safe (wrt viruses) if you follow a few rules: 1) always keep up to date with Windows updates (this can easily be done pretty much automatically); 2) use a good antivirus program (I use Avast, it's free to download and use, and unobtrusive...

the télécartes, which are sold in post offices, definitely do have an expiration date, which can be found on the card itself.

Re: Racial discrimination

by virtdave • Fri 12 Sep 2008 20:54

The USA, as many may be aware, does not always do things perfectly. But one policy that paid off was 'affirmative action', by which some disadvantaged minorities (particularly Afro-Americans) were given a leg up in, for instance, admission to professional schools. There's a debate as to whether such...
