Re: Moving to France at last

by Annik • Mon 15 Dec 2014 01:18

With memories of being in an utterly unmodernised house in January some 20 years ago, just let me remind you that the Creuse can get awfully cold and lovely old granite walls store the cold for a very long time. Do make sure you've got some form of heating, even if it's only a portable calor gas fir...

Thank you so much for that link We have just been watching the programme and it was great, especially when they went to the Chateau de Villemonteix and Moutier d'Ahun. Do I gather that all three departments in the Limousin are covered in each programme?

Re: What have you learnt?

by Annik • Sat 06 Dec 2014 10:25

I suppose I have learned that the French are French. When we first came over I worked on the principle of "Hey, we're all human beings and exactly the same under the skin" and got cross when people talked about "the French" as a sort of lump. But the more we integrate - and I would say we are very w...

Re: Cookers!

by Annik • Mon 03 Nov 2014 22:20

Twenty years ago we bought the second cheapest [Eastern European, I think] gas cooker in Conforama at Montlucon and it is still going strong. It doesn't have any frills but it cooks things! Grills are very hard to find in France, as are double ovens. We compensate by using a Remoska (see Lakeland ca...

Re: Change of vehicle ownership

by Annik • Thu 24 Jul 2014 09:59

To conclude the story, we have just received via the French equivalent of registered post, the final immatriculation document for the tractor, having been given a temporary one at the prefecture on Monday. It's now Thursday, so I think that's pretty impressive. I was really interested to hear about ...

Change of vehicle ownership

by Annik • Wed 23 Jul 2014 12:26

We have heard so many horror stories about French bureaucracy that we thought we ought to record the following positive experience. We have bought an elderly tractor from a friend and expected the registration of the change of vehicle ownership and issuing of a new licence plate number for it to be ...

Re: exciting storm last night

by Annik • Sun 20 Jul 2014 23:02

Gosh, you were lucky. I'm very pleased that you, your house and belongings are unscathed. We had lots of loud sound effects but no lightning strikes this time – though our particular small area lies between two lines of high-tension cables and violent storms riccochet up and down the space between t...
