Re: An astonishing find!

Hi Jon It's wonderful to find your house on an old postcard. It somehow seems to validate its identity, doesn't it! Three years ago my husband and I organised an exhibition in the commune for August 15, because we were so worried about rural depopulation and the fact that all the old families seemed...

Hi, Yes I've seen that book and it's great. I am a member of the Societé des Sciences Naturelles, Archaeologiques et Historiques de la Creuse (SSNAHC, which you can Google) - a wonderful resource. It was founded in 1832 and is one of the oldest learned societies of this type in the country. Membersh...

Colorado Beetles

by Annik • Fri 29 Jun 2007 21:26

Help! We have just found Colorado Beetles on our potatoes. I know that in England we would be put in quarantine but I understand that they are reasonably common in France. I also gather from the Internet that they are resistant to practically all known insecticides. Wikipedia says they like potatoes...

Re: does everything need permission from the marie

by Annik • Fri 29 Jun 2007 21:22

Some friends of ours who live in England and only come over to their French house in the commune for a few weeks a year wanted to put up a metal shed from Screwfix to put things in while they do up their barn. We asked the Maire if they needed planning permission and she said, no but the applicant d...

Re: Mingling with the English

Yes, I agree. We have far more French friends than English ones and we have met nothing but kindness in France - apart from one grumpy man in the village, but he doesn't speak to anyone regardless of nationality! I suppose the timing was right in that we made our French friends first and we had no E...

Mingling with the English

by Annik • Thu 28 Jun 2007 07:01

At first we stayed away from the 'hooray Henries' and the spivs, and avoided our compatriots; now we're relaxed about our British friends A few years ago, when my husband Ed and I heard someone we didn't know speaking English in the supermarket, we would hide behind the nearest high shelves and talk...

Hi Suzanne
Thanks very much! Next time I'll be writing about "Mingling with the English" but I'll also talk about our house and how learning about it made me fascinated by the social history of the Creuse.
Best regards
Annik

Re: U.K.WEATHER.

by Annik • Tue 26 Jun 2007 21:02

Yes, here was I thinking we had been hard done by because it has rained practically every day since May 1st, our flowers were dying and our cellar flooded and had to be pumped out, but when I ordered a book via one of the Amazon second-hand book traders in Hull she replied to apologise for not sendi...

Introduction

by Annik • Thu 21 Jun 2007 00:14

Hello, everyone! What on earth am I doing here? I suppose you could blame it on the dogs. Anyway, that's why I'm here, introducing myself. Some good friends rang to say they'd listed their chambre d'hôtes on Pont Noir and so I decided to have a look. While I was here I browsed the rest of the busine...

Re: Ideas for days out

by Annik • Wed 20 Jun 2007 18:17

Sorry - I'm stupid. I had meant to say that if your friends are interested in art they might like to go to Crozant and find out about the Ecole de la Creuse which was associated with Monet and other famous artists of his day. (Just Google Monet + Crozant and you should get something). Maybe you coul...

Re: Ideas for days out

Hi, I hope I'm not too late. I endorse all the above suggestions. Do your friends like wolves? The wolf park in the mountains outside Guéret is fascinating - you watch them from a stockade so that people are restricted and the wolves are "free". There's a maze not far away which is quite good fun - ...
