Re: Switching from Windows to Linux

by smilespwp • Thu 26 Dec 2013 09:15

From what I have read, you can create a dual boot drive running Ubuntu OS on one partition of your hard drive and Windows OS on a second partition. I did try it on a single partition hard drive with Ubuntu installed, but didn't manage to create a second partition on the HD. I put that down to my ign...

Re: tax habatation

Ditto regarding having new windows fitted, no discount on the TVA because it is a maison secondaire. Just been instructed to fill in the H1 form, local Mairie said don't bother and wrote a note which I returned to Gueret. Received another H1 form and told to fill it in and return. I would like to kn...

Filming in St. Moreil for "Un Village Francaise" TV series in April 2009, gave the village something different to talk about. You had to be careful when filming was being carried out as we found out when walking down a road which was background to that scene. We were alerted when the director starte...

Annik Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately, I don't really get involved with the village's local history groups. Always seem to have things to do and this year, I have been afflicted with back problems. The village, like many others in the Creuse, is mainly populated with an ageing population, and...

Re: Wood Burning Stove Installation

by smilespwp • Thu 10 Jan 2013 09:11

There is a place in Bourganeuf who sell woodburners. They are located at the junction of Rue de Puy/Av Rene Viviani/Rue Zizim. I would imagine that Julie R could throw some more light on this one. Last time I was over was in November. Not sure if they do cuisiniere's though. Some more information: 1...

Re: Summer Reading

Have you attempted the Bernard Cornwell trilogy? Harlequin Heretic Vagabond All based on the exploits of an English archer during periods of the Hundred Years war with France (mainly in Normandie/Bretagne). Quite violent and explicit descriptions of the killing that went on. Fictional, but based on ...

Re: Ticks & Lyme Disease

Update: Got a call from the doctor's surgery 2 days after blood test saying I should contact them, which I did and was told that something had been detected in the tests and they would like me to make an appointment (even then the front desk staff were reluctant to give me an immediate, same day, ap...

Re: Ticks & Lyme Disease

Thanks for all the advice. I went to see my doctor yesterday and her lack of knowledge didn't really instill me with much confidence. For a start, she wasn't sure if the local hospital could actually carry out tests on blood samples for Lyme disease. Anyway I am now awaiting the results which could ...

Ticks & Lyme Disease

by smilespwp • Tue 03 Jul 2012 18:35

Anyone had experience of Lyme disease caused by a tick bite in the Creuse. I've been back in the UK for about two weeks now, but prior to leaving St. Moreil, I discovered a tick which had buried it's head in my upper thigh. Foolishly, I got the main body out (at that point it hadn't gorged itself on...

European Wildcat - Anyone else Seen One?

by smilespwp • Thu 31 May 2012 12:14

A couple of years ago a neighbour of mine said he had seen something looking like a raccoon walking along the wall opposite our houses. We didn't get too far in our investigations and the subject was dropped. Early last week, driving from St. Moreil to Bourganeuf (approaching St. Junien Le Bregere),...

Re: Electronics Components Sources - Limoges/Gueret

by smilespwp • Fri 20 Apr 2012 09:42

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think the Clermont-Ferrand (All Electronique) outlet is the most favourable for me. I have had an account with RS Components for nearly 40 years and I am fortunate enough to be close to CPC.Farnell, so it's easy to go and pick up whatever I need from there. But if I...

Electronics Components Sources - Limoges/Gueret

by smilespwp • Thu 19 Apr 2012 07:59

Anyone know of any electronics components retailers in the Limoges/Gueret areas ?

Wouldn't be looking for anything too complicated, just the odd resistors/capacitors/connectors.

I'll be bringing over most of what I need for my u-processing projects, just if I get pushed for a component.

Re: Les Oiseaux dans la Creuse

I think it is because their diet is mainly fish. The Japanese use them for fishing, with a restriction loop around the neck so what they dive for and catch, can't be swallowed.

They are very efficient at fishing, although their's is for survival and not for sport. Whereas anglers .....?
