Wood Burning Stove Installation

by cmchsmjm • Tue 08 Jan 2013 17:59

We would like to install a woodburner in our kitchen as we have an open fire there at the moment. The fire's OK but as we are spending more and more time at the house in colder months we would like to make the kitchen a bit (lot) warmer. My brother-in-law installs wood burners for a company in the U...

I don't even want to think about how much money I have wasted by not knowing how the whole thing works!!

We have had one of these cards for the last few years but have never figured out how you actually use the credits! We assumed we would receive vouchers in the post as we do with Tescos.
I keep forgetting to ask about it

Re: Train to Zurich

by cmchsmjm • Sat 17 Nov 2012 17:24

Thanks for the info. I looked up the route from Montlucon (via Lyon and Geneva) It is far quicker to head back up to Paris. It is only a short walk from Gare d'Austerlitz to the Gare de Lyon, or a very quick dash if you are like us last Summer when we nearly missed our train back to La Souterraine! ...

Train to Zurich

by cmchsmjm • Sat 17 Nov 2012 11:12

Does anyone out there know if it is possible to take a train from either Montlucon or Limoges to Zurich in Switzerland? We have some friends from America staying with us for a few days over Christmas and they will be traveling on to Switzerland after visiting us. Looking on the tinterweb thus far, i...

Re: Is there still a need for registered builders in La Creu

by cmchsmjm • Fri 27 Jan 2012 17:44

When we bought our house near Chatelus-Malvaleix we were lucky enough to be put in touch with Steve at La Coterie (blaudeix). Still trying to get to grips with the language it was comforting knowing that we could talk the same language. Lame excuse I know but we hadn't planned to buy our house when ...

Re: Moving abroad? Learn the lingo!

by cmchsmjm • Mon 07 Nov 2011 08:50

I find that my French improves dramatically after the 2nd or 3rd glass of Ricard! Throwing yourself in the at deep end and being out of your comfort zone is a great way to advance your knowledge of French. Our neighbours continue to be friendly and patient with our efforts to learn the language and ...

Free Wifi in Châtelus-Malvaleix

by cmchsmjm • Thu 04 Aug 2011 11:02

When driving into Châtelus-Malvaleix the other day I noticed a sign advertising free wifi but I cannot find anywhere in the town with a free signal. Does anyone living around Châtelus know where there might be free (public) wifi? As our house is only a few minuted from the town it would be far more ...

Re: Car rental near Gueret

by cmchsmjm • Sun 15 May 2011 19:33

We have used the Hertz rental office in Gueret. If you are heading into town with Aldi behind you, it is located at the service station on the right as you head up the main road towards the new roundabout. The prices are reasonable but that being said it would be interesting to know if there is some...

Re: Electric Re-wire

by cmchsmjm • Sun 27 Feb 2011 21:20

We too have used Steve at La Coterie for our rewire (and other work on our house) I can't recommend Steve enough. nice guy, great work, progress photos if you are not in France and his rates are very realistic. Just don't call him for about 12 months as we have lots to do at our place!!!!!

How can anybody do such a thing to a dog?

Apart from the suffering that Tyson has gone through it doesn’t shine a good light on Brits abroad!

Re: long term car storage, how long will a battery hold a ch

by cmchsmjm • Thu 06 Jan 2011 09:37

Thanks for the advice.
I actually bought one of the solar chargers mentioned to try and use it for charging camera equipment on location. Forgot I had it!
If we get any sun over here in the UK I'll test it out...

by cmchsmjm • Wed 05 Jan 2011 15:35

Thanks Dave, I would be parking the car at the secure car park. I think it is currently €630 per year. I am thinking that if I have the car at the airport I (and the family) would be more likely use the house for long weekends as we are only 10 minutes from the Liverpool airport and just over an hou...

long term car storage, how long will a battery hold a charge

by cmchsmjm • Wed 05 Jan 2011 14:33

I am considering parking my car at Limoges airport to take advantage of the cheap Ryan Air flights (£12 return at the end of Jan, no taxes!!) My questions is - if my car is left parked up and I disconnect the battery, how long would a fairly new battery hold a charge for? At least enough to get goin...

Re: Where can I buy an electric cooker/stove?

by cmchsmjm • Mon 03 Jan 2011 10:06

When we moved into our place last year we bought a cuisinière mixte and have been very happy with it. It is a great fail safe having the one electric hob in case your gas runs out. Having said that, we currently only stay at the house during school holidays and are still using the same small gas bot...
