Re: Using a Déchèterie

by virtdave • Thu 08 Aug 2019 18:48

The regulations change every time a bureaucrat comes up with some new way to pester folks. Last year, we just needed a little sticker to show we were residents of our commune, this year (as above) one needs a card. YMMV, so do check with your local mairie before you go to avoid being unduly annoyed ...

Re: Using a Déchèterie

Ask at your local Mairie --in our commune (St-Georges-Nigremont) one must get a card from the local trash authority, and to get the card we had to fill out and send in a formulaire supplied by the mairie . The card arrived quite quickly. For arcane reasons of French bureaucracy, our déchèterie is o...

I think Sirius is most visible in the winter. In the summer, it rises and sets with the sun, adding the heat of its rays to those of the sun, and producing the weather we've been enjoying recently

Re: Speeding fines and points

The gilets jaune s seem to be targeting speed cameras--apparently quite a number have been destroyed. Of course, No One is in favor of wanton destruction of (quasi-)governmental property. But  . There are many things in the USA which are deplorable, but we don't have (yet?) speeding tickets...

Re: 'Unwanted' books - any suggestions?

by virtdave • Thu 04 Apr 2019 21:16

You might ask at the médiathéque (either Aubusson or Felletin). There may be a similar service in or near Guéret. The Aubusson/Felletin one does have quite a few books in English

Re: French numbers are funny!

by virtdave • Sun 24 Feb 2019 01:44

it's particularly tricky when being given phone numbers--the French have the annoying tradition of insisting on giving one a series of five two digit numbers, and tho I now speak pretty adequate French, I have to ask them "en chiffres, s'il vous plaît"

of course, the grain itself is very simple to prepare, there are instructions on the boxes. I've just googled recipes for the sauce, with quite satisfactory results

Re: Travelling after Brexit

by virtdave • Sun 24 Feb 2019 01:34

I doubt there will be any hassle coming from the UK to France. We have traveled from the USA to France and back dozens of times, with our dog--the only thing required each way was a certification of current rabies vaccination. There is an enormous form which 28 European bureaucrats have cobbled toge...

Re: Three phase - how do I hate it, let me count the ways!

by virtdave • Mon 17 Dec 2018 17:44

RobertArthur probably has more informed advice, but why have three-phase at all? Unless you are running huge electric motors, it'd seem like just one more thing to go wrong. You might ask your very patient electrician if it would be easy to change over to what I imagine is a simpler system.

Yeah, I thought the portrait of Guéret was rather more dismal than necessary....I've not been to the gare lately, but my recollection doesn't include what the reporter described. But I do think the new shopping center north of the quatre voies has sapped a lot of energy from the center of town.
