All those in the east Creuse area who are interested in joining the association are welcome to look at the website for the association, where membership information and events information is provided. Or you can send me an e-mail with your details - name, location, e-mail and I will send you some mo...

Re: ALEC - 2nd event

by Twinkletoes • Sat 12 Mar 2011 17:05

The association met again on Tuesday evening with a Fish and Chip night at Auberge du Golfe. The meal was lovely and the hosts excellent. It is the first time I had been to this restaurant and I would highly recommend it for a plate of good fish and chips English style if you miss it. Also they do a...

Sorry I am going off on one here, but why can't people get their facts right before creating panic. Firstly if you pay tax in France you actually pay less than in the UK - hey surprise surprise!!. Your costs are actually social charges for health, pension and the like which are more than the UK admi...

Trying to locate the Buchanans

by Twinkletoes • Tue 24 Jun 2008 17:35

We have guests at the moment who, while holidaying here, went on a long drive to try and catch up with old friends of theirs over in Abzac, but unfortunately they had obviously moved and they haven't been able to find any forwarding contact details. I said I would try and see if anybody knew them fr...

Re: Horses in the Creuse

by Twinkletoes • Tue 24 Jun 2008 17:19

Another option is to pop into your local tourist office and pick up the brochure Creuse en Cheval. This gives you all the equestrian centres in the Creuse and also whether they speak English or not. Great little directory.

Re: Electric Fences

by Twinkletoes • Thu 29 May 2008 09:20

Well my dog certainly knows when they are on. When he was a pup he went flying into a cow field to say hello and caught his tail on the electric fence which gave him a fright. Since then he won't go near an electric fence when its on, but he will quite happily wander into a field surrounded by an el...

Re: Plant names in French

Will do Shogun. Have dropped the conversion into spreadsheet. If you would like a copy send me your e-mail by PM and I will send as I can't attach an XLS file to this message or a PM I don't think. :)

That goes for anybody else as well.

Walnut thieves

by Twinkletoes • Thu 01 May 2008 18:21

Just a warning - be careful where you store your walnuts over winter. I had a huge quantity in 2006 and stored them and managed to keep them all and enjoy them in various salad and meals. In 2007 I stored them in exactly the same place and to my amazement the other day went to get some and saw a mou...

by Twinkletoes • Thu 01 May 2008 18:13

Anybody out there know if there is an RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) equivalent in France?

Also I would like to improve my Gardening French so anybody watch any gardening shows regularly on French TV? I haven't caught any yet but I don't watch French TV every night.

Re: Plant names in French

by Twinkletoes • Thu 01 May 2008 18:09

Thank you very much Shogun22 - that is an excellent source for the French common names and extremely helpful. It will save hours of the 'Latin Twist' which I had started to do. Also it will help in my french conversation lessons because my teacher is not so up on Latin names for plants and we have s...

Plant names in French

by Twinkletoes • Thu 01 May 2008 12:57

Does anybody have any idea where I can find French translations for English plants (not generally found in the dictionary and also Google translate is useless). I grow a number of plants and am considering opening up a small nursery but need to get some terminology sorted out. For example I gave my ...

Re: Medical Services

by Twinkletoes • Sun 20 Apr 2008 10:26

We have had nothing but good results with the medical system. I have never had to wait more than 24 hours for an appointment with either a doctor or a dentist. Both have been very efficient and given you the time you need (each having at least 15 minutes between patients). The dentists here do a muc...

Fishing in the Creuse - recommendations needed

by Twinkletoes • Wed 02 Apr 2008 18:16

I have had a request from guests arriving in August as to where the best places for fly fishing are in the Creuse. Not being a fish person (except for dinner) I don't know where to start. (I already have sent them Jonchere so don't need that one). Any recommendations particularly around North East C...

Re: Impending doom for Chambre d'Hote

by Twinkletoes • Sun 23 Mar 2008 11:16

Its actually good news for those who do register, as Gites de France already know that nearly 40% of their Chambre d'Hote s will close down if this comes in, so those who have registered or will register will get more business, and thus should find it a little easier to make some reasonable money at...

Impending doom for Chambre d'Hote

by Twinkletoes • Wed 19 Mar 2008 20:04

From 2009 all Chambre d'hote, however big or small, will have to be registered with the Chambre de Commerce. This means that everybody who owns a business of this type whether retired and earning a pittance or whether as their main business will have to pay the associated social charges (€3000 in fi...

Re: Growing garlic

by Twinkletoes • Tue 12 Feb 2008 17:22

I have grown garlic and it was okay - quite small though. This time I am trying big cloves to atart with and as I planted in November I already have good shoots coming through. If your ground is very wet you can grow them in pots. Make sure the top of the clove is just poking out the ground when you...

We know of someone whose job it is to ' gas the little blighters'. He comes and assesses your area and number of hills etc and gives you a devi for the work. He then puts poison gas down into the tunnels (blocking off all their tunnels and routes). He reckons they will come back after a time particu...

Re: Find a person

by Twinkletoes • Wed 19 Dec 2007 20:36

You could try Pages Jaunes (telephone directory) assuming they are listed. Here is the link. I tried it for someone I know in our area and they came up with full address and telephone number. You don't need the whole address just put 17 into the department box plus the name obviously and see what co...
