Landscaping

by Robjelves • Mon 06 Jun 2016 23:42

Hi, we only have a small garden attached to the house and it doesn't get the sun after mid afternoon. We have a larger garden over the lane that I would like to transform from a field to something more useful. Ideally I would like to scrape part of it level and install some sort of patio/ hardstandi...

Re: Brittany Ferries - economie service

by Robjelves • Mon 16 May 2016 18:57

We always do the overnight from Portsmouth to Caen mainly due to timings. We have also done the economy and found it very good indeed. The only difference for us is no carpet in cabin and no free breakfast, everything else seems the same. If it fits with your travel plans go for it.

Smoke Alarms

by Robjelves • Mon 21 Dec 2015 10:09

Hi I am aware of the forthcoming changes regarding smoke alarms on the 1st of January.. Would someone be able to give me a rough breakdown as to what is required as my French isn't sufficient to be able to fully understand it.
Rob.

Re: Terrorism: Will you change your plans?

by Robjelves • Mon 23 Nov 2015 09:11

I too would have to say Yes.. We are in the UK and would like to go Christmas shopping in the new Grand Central but feel very apprehensive.. I know you should carry on as normal but if you don't need to go somewhere, however nice it would be.

Re: How do you change your cash from sterling to euros?

by Robjelves • Thu 29 Oct 2015 20:13

Just thought I'd share this with you. We have just used a new service called transferwise, you can download it as an app. It allows you to transfer money between different locations and the rate pretty much matches the mid marked rate. We did an initial transfer of £500 just to see how it works, it ...

Re: SPANC inspection

by Robjelves • Tue 08 Sep 2015 22:06

A quick update on our system. Our current none conforming fosse exits into a communal drain that goes through a neighbours property...long story that. We had planned to have our new system located in the front of the house and a pump to exit the cleaner water into the same drain. However the neighbo...

Re: SPANC inspection

by Robjelves • Fri 21 Aug 2015 12:30

Just re read your first post. Ours is currently a holiday home and it does affect what type of system you can fit. We wanted a microstation but they are only suitable for full time occupancy. It might be worth you contacting Evolis 23 and getting them round to have a look at what you have got. I'm s...

Re: SPANC inspection

by Robjelves • Thu 20 Aug 2015 21:30

We purchase our property in 2013 and was told at the time the fosse did not conform. We were initially told we had 12 months to get it sorted but at the signing the notaire said we had 3 years so we thought no more about it. In April this year we received a letter from Evolis 23 to say we had until ...

Re: Dog friendly cabins Portsmouth Le Havre

by Robjelves • Fri 31 Jul 2015 22:18

We normally do the overnight from Portsmouth to Caen and our dog/s stay in the car no problem at all. We have done the overnight with the dog friendly cabin. They are great, you'll get you car put on the deck outside so it's just a short walk to the cabin. They even provided a dog bowl and treats in...

Had a quick search on the web. Found this thread and an extract from it.. Not an easy one to answer! http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/1611386/which-side-of-polycarb-has-uv-coating I'm putting up a commercial greenhouse right now. Re: Sky Digibox question

It was good to meet you both. We love it here in the creuse and love to here about places people have been. We have been here two years and seen a lot but feel there is still so much more to explore. Glad you got it sorted. Our sky dish at home got hit with a football and we too lost signal. If you ...

Re: Sky Digibox question

by Robjelves • Sun 17 May 2015 20:53

Hi Dave. Can't answer that one. Can only presume the card has been blocked or the box is faulty.. I have a spare Sky + box in France that you are welcome to.. We come over again next weekend. We have Sky HD in England and the + box didn't like our card so we got hold of a second HD box, hence the sp...

Re: fosse septique

by Robjelves • Sun 03 May 2015 18:08

We purchased in June 2013 and were told at the signing that the fosse did not conform to current standards. As previously stated we thought we had 4 years to correct this, then last week a recorded delivery letter dropped on our doorstep in England stating the time frame. Until we get some quotes in...

by Robjelves • Sun 03 May 2015 12:10

Hi, we have just received a letter from SPANC informing us that we have to bring our fosse up to current standards by November otherwise we wil, be fined. Somehow I was under the impression we had 4 years to complete the work but it turns out we have 1. I will be sending some emails out later to see...

Re: water heaters /electrics

by Robjelves • Sun 26 Apr 2015 21:38

Ok no probs. fellitin is a bit of a jaunt but we do it now and then as we love the town and the market. As Robert said it should be fine and if it's well insulated it shouldn't cost too much as it's just keeping the tank warm with no draw off. We plant to get some spare keys and leave them with our ...

Re: Surface mounted electrics

by Robjelves • Thu 16 Apr 2015 22:16

Thanks all for the replys. I'll have to rethink this one. Think it's odd they don't allow metal conduit, can't get any more protected!!! Freezerbill Can't chase it into the wall as it has some sort of render on it in places and wanted to keep the look. Robertarthur love the links, don't speak or rea...

Surface mounted electrics

by Robjelves • Tue 14 Apr 2015 21:03

Hi, I want to mount some electrical fittings ( socket and light switch ) onto a stone wall. I want to keep all the stone visible so the fittings will have to be surface mount. I was planning on running the wiring in galvanised conduit as I think that would look best against the stone. The proble I'm...
